- Hey BIG TIM! Glad to have you here to talk with you about your latest release ‘In The Air’.
Pleasure is all mine! Thank you very much for the invitation and the opportunity to talk about this international collaboration.
- Can you please tell us more details about ‘In The Air’? How did it come to life and when and how did you meet CERES and LOTUS?
There’s actually a funny story behind the original track! ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins is one of my mother’s favourite tracks. She was, and still is, a HUGE fan of his and believe it or not: she even went to one of Phil Collins concerts while being heavily pregnant with me. Was I intuitively influenced? Probably! When my mom heard that I am doing my own version of it she was overwhelmed with happiness and even agreed to shoot some content with me for my socials! It was the sweetest thing to witness.
Besides, I started playing the drums when I was younger and spent hours perfectioning my rendition of his iconic drum fill. So, for me it is an homage to having created my version 44 years after its original release. With this it was important to me to not just create a cover in my own style but to release an interpolation. That’s when I got together with CERES – I remembered her from the days when she sang vocals on Tik Tok and her voice stood out to me. Thanks to technology it was not a problem at all that CERES lives in Brazil and I am located in Germany. In my opinion, she did a great job giving the song a new touch fitting the 2025 power I wanted to start the year with. LOTUS and I knew each other beforehand and when this project came to life, she was the first point of contact to try out different ideas around the track.
- What sets ‘In The Air’ apart from your previous work, and why should listeners tune in?
Not sure if this is odd, but I’ve always loved reworking classic songs. It’s a challenge for sure because most people know them and if they love it, their expectations are really high. Quick fun fact here: A highlight that I had with a prior release was that I got to meet one of the original artists: fortunately, Heinz Rudolph Kunze fell in love with my version and even shot the artwork with me! He’s just a great guy!
So, ‘In The Air Tonight’ fitted perfectly into my artistic vision in this sense. The biggest difference, however, is that we didn’t want to release a traditional cover or rework. Instead, we created a newly interpolated version, where only the core melody and chorus from the original remains, while conveying a fresh message lyrically. Something new I tried are three distinct drops with an exciting new sound design which ultimately turns the original into a dynamic, tension-filled modern dance track ready to hit a new generation. Hopefully making them fall in love with it just as much as our parents & grandparents did with the original.
- How would you describe your sound?
A commercially driven techno-inspired sound paired with classic EDM and dance elements. It really works well in Germany and I am ready to cross territorial boundaries. When looking into the crowd playing live, there is this astonishing energy – I always get instantly hyped watching and witnessing them having a great time.
- Who is BIG TIM and why music? At what age did you get into music and how?
It sounds so cliché, but really my whole life has revolved around this topic. As a multi-instrumentalist I’ve always been playing music while simultaneously jamming and experimenting. Much to the annoyance of my parents I started with the drums at the age of nine, added the trumpet at eleven years old, and played in several bands until I was 16. As a teenager, I was increasingly exposed to electronic music and that’s where a shift in genres happened: I started mixing tracks together using my first DJ software – it was the first try of producing music electronically.
During the Covid pandemic I fortunately had a lot of free time on my hands to dive into the rabbit hole of music production. Pretty soon it became clear to me that I really wanted people to listen to what I’ve created and play it on stages. With this motivation I focused on building my artist project, BIG TIM. You may not know what I look like in real life, but let me tell you: I am almost 2 meters tall. TALL TIM didn’t sound as nice as BIG TIM though. 🙂
I only started sharing my music on social media in 2023 – and now, here we are! I could not have dreamt of growing so fast, it’s incredible and I am very thankful for all the support.
- Do you remember the name of the first song that made you love electronic music?
Absolutely! It was actually a TV commercial by – I remember to this day – the car brand Citroën: David Guetta vs The Egg – Love Don’t Let Me Go // Walking Away
- Who or what has been your biggest inspiration throughout your music journey?
I’ll have to stick with David Guetta on this one. Another big inspiration – also because of how young this DJ/producer was when he was breaking through – is definitely Martin Garrix.
- What’s the one activity you love doing in your free time when not making music?
This is an easy one: I love cooking! Not just for myself but also for my family and friends. The great thing about it is that I get to spend time with my loved ones and enjoy homemade food together. It grounds me when I get home from shows all over Germany, Austria & Switzerland nowadays.
- Can you tell us more about your dream and future collaboration and what do you hope to achieve in the next 2 years in your professional career?
It is crazy to me that I only started making my music public in 2023 and already a lot of dreams have come true! The first song that got my project lots of attention was a new interpretation of the theme music from a popular German children’s series. If my fan base and success continues to grow as it has until now, I am more than happy and could not ask for more.
Of course, there’s always this wish for developing further and refining my sound as I gradually go on in my career, so let’s see what’s going to happen! I am ready for what’s to come 🙂
- This is all for now. Thank you for your time answering our questions. Where can our community find out more about your music and your future releases?
Thank you so much for the opportunity and the nice conversation! All the best! 😊
