Delivering driving melodic techno with ethnic undercurrents, KASIA is rapidly ascending to the highest echelons of electronic music. The Miami-based DJ and producer with polish roots have garnered more coveted slots at premier clubs and festivals- including Ultra Miami and Resistance etc. In this interview, KASIA opened up about her “journey” in the music industry, her unique style, the story behind the latest track “Universal Nation” and many more.
1. Hello KASIA, thank you for taking the time to speak with EDM NOMAD. How are you doing?
Hello hello! Thank you for having me. I’m doing fantastic, thank you. I’m thrilled to be here and excited to chat with you.
2. Talking about your early steps in your music career, you started playing the drums from an early age. Can you share with us how you decided to become a DJ, and how this experience as a drummer influenced your musical approach?
Absolutely! My journey in music began at an early age as a drummer. Growing up, my dad, who is also a drummer, used to play in a band, so I was constantly surrounded by the rhythmic sounds of drums. I was naturally drawn to music and always had a fondness for the nightlife scene. Becoming a DJ felt like a natural progression for me.
Initially, I acquired DJ equipment simply to experiment and have fun with it. However, as I started to learn and explore the craft, it ignited a deep passion within me. The more I delved into DJing, the more I realized that this was precisely what I wanted to pursue as my life’s path.
My background as a drummer has had a significant influence on my musical approach as a DJ. It has given me a solid foundation in understanding rhythm, timing, and groove. I often find myself incorporating elements of live drumming into my DJ sets, bringing a unique energy and dynamic to the performance. The experience as a drummer has greatly shaped my musical sensibilities and allows me to approach DJing with a distinct perspective.
3. Your sounds are known for ephemeral melancholia with high-energy melodic techno, how difficult was it for you to find your unique style?
Finding my unique style came naturally to me. I create and play music that resonates with me on a personal level. I’ve never approached it with the intention of fitting into a specific style or sound. I believe that my style is a reflection of who I am as a person. I’m naturally drawn to energetic and high-energy music, but I also appreciate the depth and the moments of reflection that music can provide. The combination of ephemeral melancholia and high-energy melodic techno is an expression of my own musical preferences and personality.
4. What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your DJ career, and how did you overcome them?
When starting my DJ career, I encountered several challenges along the way. One of the main hurdles was establishing myself in a competitive industry and gaining recognition. Breaking through and getting opportunities to showcase my talent was not easy, especially as a newcomer. To overcome these challenges, I focused on a few key strategies.
Firstly, I dedicated countless hours to honing my skills, both in DJing and music production. I continuously sought to improve my technical abilities and expand my musical knowledge.
Secondly, I actively networked and connected with others in the industry. I attended events, collaborated with fellow artists, and built relationships with promoters and music professionals. These connections helped me secure gigs and open doors to new opportunities.
Lastly, perseverance was crucial. I faced rejections and setbacks, but I refused to let them discourage me. I stayed persistent, maintaining a strong belief in my talent and my passion for music. By staying true to my vision and continually pushing forward, I managed to overcome these challenges and make significant strides in my DJ career.
5. Also, congratulations for your latest release “Universal Nation” – Can you tell us about the inspiration and the creative process behind this masterpiece?
Thank you! I’m thrilled to share more about the inspiration and creative process behind “Universal Nation.”
The track was actually inspired by the legendary track of the same name by Push. I’ve always had a deep admiration for the original track and wanted to give it a fresh interpretation.To bring “Universal Nation” to life, I combined high-energy melodic techno sounds with the iconic elements of the original track. This fusion allowed me to infuse new energy and a modern twist into the composition. In addition, I incorporated an emotional vocal element that adds depth and provides a moment of reflection within the track. This vocal brings a beautiful and poignant dimension to the overall composition, enhancing the emotional journey for listeners.
Through the creative process, I aimed to create a masterpiece that pays homage to the original track while adding my unique touch. I wanted to breathe new life into the music and provide a fresh experience for the listeners. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring “Universal Nation” to the world.
6. This year, you also have released- Concussion EP, what can we expect to hear from you in the near future?
This year holds more exciting music releases from me. I have a collaboration with Vincenzo Sarti called “Not Alone” coming up on Einmusika Recordings in the following week. Additionally I have two more tracks coming up this year so stay tuned 😉
7. Do you have any dream collaboration?
Certainly! I have a number of dream collaborations that I am actively working towards and manifesting into reality. It’s an exciting process to envision collaborating with artists who inspire me and share a similar musical vision. While I prefer to keep the specific names under wraps for now, I can assure you that I am eagerly pursuing these dream collaborations. Stay tuned, as I continue to strive towards making these musical dreams come true and sharing them with all of you.
8. Talking about festivals, how are you feeling about returning on stage at UNTOLD Festival?
Returning to the stage at UNTOLD Festival fills me with immense excitement. Romania has always been a vibrant and energetic place, and UNTOLD is renowned for its incredible production. This year, I’m thrilled to be part of the amazing lineup on the Galaxy stage. The best part is that my set will be streamed live, allowing all of you to tune in and join the experience, no matter where you are. Get ready for an unforgettable performance filled with electrifying energy and music!
9. Also, what can UNTOLD fans expect from your set? Are there any special surprise or elements you will add to your performance?
UNTOLD fans can expect an unforgettable experience during my set. I have prepared a selection of my freshly made unreleased music, which will be blended seamlessly with captivating techno sounds. Additionally, I’ll be sprinkling in some classic tunes that are sure to ignite nostalgia and create a vibrant atmosphere. While I don’t want to give away all the surprises, rest assured that there will be special elements and surprises woven into the performance to make it an extraordinary and memorable journey for everyone in attendance. Get ready for a unique fusion of sounds that will leave you wanting more!
10. Moreover, you played at many festivals and clubs- including Ultra Miami and Resistance, and you have had residencies in Ibiza and Tulum. Can you share any memorable moments you’ve experienced while playing at a festival?
During one of my performances at a festival in Turkey, a guy proposed to his girlfriend right in front of the DJ deck while I was playing. It was an incredible moment filled with love and joy. I’m thrilled to hear that they are now happily married. Being a part of such special moments is truly rewarding, and it’s a reminder of the power of music to bring people together and create lasting memories. It’s moments like these that make my journey as a musician truly unforgettable.
11. In the end, do you have any dream venue or festival where you wish to perform at?
Absolutely, it’s wonderful to have aspirations and dreams for the future. While I prefer not to disclose specific venues or festivals until they become a reality, I do have a list of amazing productions that I would love to be a part of. It’s important to keep dreaming and working towards those goals, as you never know what the future holds. I’m hopeful that one day, I’ll have the opportunity to perform at these dream venues and festivals, and I can’t wait to share those experiences with all of you.
