The electronic duo Mångata Projekt, composed of Tasos Filippou and Thanos Makris, has captivated audiences with deep, melodic house and techno for over a decade. Their name, “Mångata,” reflects their artistic vision, drawn from the Swedish word for “the roadlike reflection of moonlight on water.” This name symbolizes the immersive experience they create, each performance a journey across reflective sonic landscapes.
In this exclusive interview with EDMNOMAD, the duo shares how it all began, new music, and forming deeper connections.
Connecting with Intimate Crowds
Having played in venues worldwide, they express passion for connecting with intimate crowds. “Playing for a smaller crowd feels different,” they say. “It’s like you’re with family and friends. There’s this sense of closeness, and you’re able to connect with each person in the room.” Their recent performance at Galaxy Bar in Dubai exemplified this closeness. For those in attendance, it felt more like a family gathering than a DJ set, with the audience responding to each beat as part of a shared experience. Their Thursday set was part of Galaxy Bar’s Supernovas program that brings renowned DJs across the world to Dubai. Breathing life to this intimate Dubai experience for 100 select VIPs are Vasileios Tsokas, Group Entertainment Director, Tashas Group in partnership with John Hanlidis which owns JH Entertainment UAE.
A Duo Born By Chance
The duo’s story began 11 years ago, a partnership formed out of necessity. Originally performing separately, they first played together due to a scheduling conflict. “We were both booked for a party, but there weren’t enough slots,” they recall. “The club suggested we play together since our styles were so similar. We did a back-to-back set, and the chemistry was instant.” Since then, Filippou and Makris have developed their synergy, known for three-hour sets filled with spontaneity. “To this day, we don’t know what’s on each other’s USBs,” they laugh. “But we trust each other completely, and that element of surprise keeps every set fresh.”
New Release: Much Future No Present
Their new track, Much Future No Present with Filippos, marks a major milestone for Mångata Projekt. Though they played it live for nine months, they waited patiently for the right label. “This track needed the perfect balance—the right label, the right promotion,” they emphasize. Now, as part of Amaeo’s ‘To Be Discovered’ compilation, Much Future No Present joins a lineup of standout tracks. “We’re proud to release it with Amaeo,” they say. “It’s a track that sets the tone with a groovy beat, plucky melody, and spheric pads, ready for the dance floor.”
Crafting a Unique Live Experience
Their live sets mirror this thoughtful approach. Each performance tells a story through loops, drops, and transitions. “When we’re playing live, it’s not just a DJ set,” they explain. “It’s an experience that brings everyone together, where the crowd is part of the story. We love to surprise the audience, and each set is different—no two performances are ever the same.”
Letting the Music Speak
For Mångata Projekt, music goes beyond words—it’s a form of expression that reveals their deepest emotions and intentions. When asked what their music might say about them, the duo responded, “For us, music always speaks louder than words and expresses all of the feelings we want to share with the crowd. And trust us, there is never nothing left unsaid!” This approach shapes each of their performances, creating a connection that resonates far beyond the beat.
As they look to the future, Mångata Projekt is eager to experiment with new sounds and surprises for their fans. “Experimenting and implementing unexpected and more freestyle elements in all of our sets and productions is always our thing,” they share. Currently, they are working on a new track that will incorporate original vocals for the first time—a big step that promises to deliver something truly unique. “Counting on a big surprise, stay tuned,” they tease, hinting at exciting developments on the horizon.
Looking Ahead with Mångata Projekt
As Mångata Projekt continues to evolve, their commitment to authenticity and connection remains strong. Whether performing for a sold-out show at Reflected Athens, with energy lasting until 7 am, or at an intimate gathering at Galaxy Bar, their mission stays clear. “For us, it’s all about creating a moment,” they reflect. “To make people feel something, to connect with them deeply. That’s why we do this.”
With Much Future No Present now released, Mångata Projekt looks forward to sharing a new chapter in their story. “We’re thrilled to see where this track takes us,” they conclude. With dedication to craft, community, and creativity, Mångata Projekt’s journey is far from over.
