IT’S TIME TO START

AUDIO INTERFACE
You’re almost ready to start, but you also need an Audio Interface to process all sounds and recording in high quality sounds. I have the UAD Apollo Twin. It’s really expensive but in my opinion one of the best audio interfaces out there. And you also can buy presets for it that are really good.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?
Start up your software, in my case Logic Pro X. I always start with a melody. You can also start with a kick and bass, but i always start with the melody of the track. So i turned on my midi keyboard and sometimes i have a voice memo on my phone with an idea, but it also happend that i turned on Spotify and check out which tracks i really like. It’s good to have some reference tracks that inspires you.

I HAVE FOUND THE RIGHT MELODIE. WHAT’S NEXT?
Once you get the melody it’s time to create the bassline. When you have those two parts it will become easier to building up your track. I always start with the drop and building up backwards. It’s also a good way to sit down with a sing and songwriter to create the melody and the vocal first. When you have the vocal i always load the vocal and guitar for example in Logic and creating all the chords first on my midi keyboard with a piano vst. When all the chords are there i make the drop, than the build up and after that i creating the first and second verse. It’s important that you first build up the whole track.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY EVERYTHING?

THE MOST IMPORTANT OF COurse is to have a laptop, software and headphone or speakers. but if you don’t want to get a discussion with your neighbours it’s better to use a headphone. in logic pro x for example you already have sounds you can work with. you must be very creative, but it’s possible to create cool songs.
