Exclusive with Sub Zero Project: Hardstyle’s High-Voltage Duo

Sub Zero Project on trust, Hardstyle’s global rise, and the joy of experimentation.

Sub Zero Project stands on the edge of another career high, their music echoes across festival fields and global stages. Reclaiming their place at #64 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs for 2025, the Dutch duo returns not just as producers, but as architects of hardstyle’s new era. Their long-awaited ID, Brace for Impact with Hardwell and Lil Jon, finally roared into existence this year, unleashing a surge of excitement from fans who had waited for its release. The track captures everything that defines their sound. Fierce precision, cinematic power, and the ability to move thousands in unison. With every drop, Sub Zero Project continue to blur the line between intensity and emotion, proving that hard dance is no longer confined to the underground but thriving at the center of global electronic music.

Tomorrowland Mainstage with Sub Zero Project 2025

The energy of their live shows has always been central to who they are. Their Tomorrowland Mainstage debut was a defining moment that continues to resonate deeply. When the music faded and the lights dimmed, what remained was pure adrenaline and gratitude. In an exclusive interview with Angelo De Guzman, Editorial Head at EDMNOMAD, the duo shares: “When we left the stage, the adrenaline was still rushing through our bodies,” they recalled. “We were slowly coming down from a performance that we had been working towards for a long time. The outcome couldn’t have been better though, a packed stage and a crowd that gave us so much energy. That’s what stayed with us: the unmatched energy from the audience.”

That connection defines their artistry. It is not only about how loud the music gets but also about the emotional current beneath it. Every beat they deliver on stage is built from years of refinement, dedication, and shared ambition. The Dutch duo never forgets that each milestone they reach began with that same feeling of energy and connection.

From Cage Stage to Mainstage

Their relationship with Tomorrowland began long before global recognition. Their first performance was on the Cage Stage, an intimate setting filled with nerves and excitement. “Our first show at Tomorrowland was on the Cage Stage back then. It was also the very first time we had ever visited the festival,” they shared. “We honestly didn’t know what to expect until we entered the festival grounds. It was completely overwhelming. The size of the venue, design of the stages, and the number of people. We fell in love with Tomorrowland right then and there.”

That early experience shaped who they became. To go from visitors to Mainstage performers at one of the world’s biggest festivals is personal and symbolic. It shows how consistency and creative vision lead to unforgettable moments. Their Mainstage debut years later felt like a full-circle moment, not simply a career highlight but proof of their growth and the global acceptance of hardstyle as a powerful genre.

Sub Zero Project on Hardstyle as a Global Language

Hardstyle’s reach now stretches far beyond Europe, vibrating through cities from Bangkok to Los Angeles. For the Hardstyle DJ duo, that global embrace feels earned. “These days, hardstyle has become quite a broad term when it comes to the sound,” they said. “But speaking for ourselves, we definitely feel that we’re finally at a stage where our music is globally recognized and understood.”

Finding balance is everything. “Again, it all depends on the type of hardstyle,” they explained. “There’s some extreme stuff out there that’s definitely too intense for a mainstream audience. But in general, the kind of music we produce and play is well-received by mainstream listeners. In fact, we’ve noticed that hard dance is becoming more and more mainstream. It’s also all about how you present the music. When we play for a new crowd, we definitely take that into consideration when preparing our set.”

Before Together Festival in Bangkok, they reflected on what makes Asia’s energy unmatched. “We love playing for the Asian audience, there’s always so much energy and positive vibes! Hardstyle is very popular there, which gives us lots of opportunities when it comes to selecting tracks for our set. No holding back!”

From Amsterdam Music Festival to global stages, Sub Zero Project and their open energy proves one thing. The genre belongs to everyone who feels it.

Tokyo, Trust, and the Power of Partnership

Some places leave a deeper mark than others. “Tokyo was an unforgettable experience,” they shared. “It was our first time in Japan, and we didn’t really know what to expect, but the crowd was unbelievable. We were amazed that they knew all our tracks. And the city itself is absolutely incredible. We loved it.”

Their creative rhythm runs deeper than performance. Sub Zero Project thrive on instinct and trust, a quiet understanding that powers their sound. “Honestly, we never argue,” they admitted. “We always seem to agree and respect each other’s ideas when it comes to producing. We’re often on the same page about where we want to go with a track, and throughout the process, we trust each other’s input to achieve the best result. Maybe that just means we’re easy going guys, haha. Definitely no big egos.”

That harmony gives them freedom to explore, to take risks without hesitation. “Subconsciously, that’s pretty much how we make our music anyway,” they said. “We’re always experimenting with new ideas in the studio, maybe a combination of the two: innovation that often leads to something a bit ‘weirder,’ but we would never choose ‘wiser.’ That just sounds too calculated,” they end with a chuckle.

Every session becomes an experiment guided by instinct rather than ego, where creativity flows easily between them, never forced, never predictable.

Behind their hard-hitting sound lies emotional depth. “We wouldn’t say ‘incredibly vulnerable,’ but there are a few songs that fans probably have no idea what personal meaning they have for us,” they shared. “And that’s totally fine, because that’s what music is all about. It’s more about what it means to you personally than to anyone else. For example, lyrics or a melody can have a completely different impact on someone else.”

Sub Zero Project Continues to Chase the Dream

The touring life can be relentless, but their passion never wavers. “Sometimes it can be full-on, especially the touring,” they admitted. “But we’re still chasing our dreams and feel blessed for everything our career has brought us so far. Even though it can be tough at times, it also gives us a lot of energy!”

When asked what they would miss most if Sub Zero Project had to stop, they were clear. “We would miss being performing DJs.” Live performance remains their heartbeat, where their connection with fans becomes real.

Offstage, small rituals keep them grounded. “Telegram,” they said when asked about their most-used app. For travel essentials, “We don’t leave the house without our Nintendo Switch. Not ridiculous, essential!” And when hunger strikes, their answer was simple. “Burgers!”
