- Hey Jstn Dmnd! Glad to have you here to ask you some questions about your latest release ‘Glorious’.
- Hey! Thanks for having me.
- Can you please tell us the story behind ‘Glorious’? How did it come to life and when?
- “Glorious” is really the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. After consistently collaborating with producers and releasing songs through labels for four years, I felt it was time to create something that truly represented my journey and where I am in my life and career. The inspiration for the song struck during a night of creativity and reflection. I’ve always taken others’ opinions with a grain of salt, but I had a producer friend of mine stop by the studio so I showed him the idea I was working on, and he said “Drill & EDM can’t go together.” It sparked something in me. That comment became the fuel I needed to write and record the song that night. It’s a fusion of New York Drill and Dubstep/Hybrid Trap, with my rap vocals layered on top. It’s a celebration of perseverance and overcoming obstacles, a testament to not letting anyone else’s doubts hold you back.
- Why should people listen to and stream the ‘Glorious’?
- It’s not your typical song – it’s a sonic journey that blends gritty New York vibes with pulsating EDM energy. Whether you’re into rap, EDM, or both, “Glorious” is a one-of-a-kind experience that grabs your attention from the jump. It’s a mix of heartfelt lyrics and a powerful beat, it’s like nothing I’ve ever heard before, which is why I love it so much.
- How would you describe your sounds?
- At the moment It’s a blend of Hip-Hop and EDM. I’m a huge Trap Music fan. But the thing is – a lot of what’s out there doesn’t resonate with me when it comes to lyrics. To me, music is all about that feeling, that connection that runs deep.
- I’ve always been about pushing boundaries and experimenting with different sounds and styles. I like mixing it up while staying rooted in what resonates with me. Because at the end of the day, that’s where the true essence of music lies – in trying new things while staying true to yourself.
- Who is Jstn Dmnd and why music? At what age did you get into music and how?
- Jstn Dmnd is the culmination of my musical journey and evolution as an artist. I’ve been passionate about music for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until 15 years old that I started recording and taking it seriously. I started writing lyrics and eventually producing beats, immersing myself in Hip-Hop. By the age of 18, I had self-released two successful mixtapes, making a name for myself (which was “Diamond” at the time) across Canada before streaming existed. We put in the leg work and filled backpacks with physical CDs and sold them outside of busy clubs all over the country almost 20 years ago. Music became my outlet for self-expression and creativity, allowing me to channel my emotions and experiences into something tangible and meaningful.
- Do you remember the name of the first song you heard that made you want to pursue a career in EDM instead of Hip-Hop?
- Absolutely! A friend of mine who was a resident DJ at a club here in Ottawa was spinning one night and he dropped Netsky’s Remix of “Everyday” by Rusko. I remember it like it was yesterday, I had lyrics running through my mind and I ran over to ask what that song was called. I was so hyped up that I went home and wrote a song to it, and released it online that same week. That was my introduction to mixing Rap with EDM.
- Can you tell us who’s your source of inspiration or what inspires you when you’re writing or producing music?
- My inspiration comes from a variety of sources – from personal experiences and emotions to the energy of the world around me. I’m constantly inspired by artists of all genres who push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. My playlists consist of all types of music. EDM, Hip-Hop, Blues, R&B, Motown, Rock, Pop, etc. so it all depends on my mood. Lately, I’ve been listening to Fabian Mazur, Skrillex, Drama B, Polyphia, J’calm, Fivio Foreign, NF, Fred again, Elijah The Boy, Teddy Swims, and some close friends of mine that I work with regularly who have genius minds when it comes to creating music, such as Famillia, Young Emotion, TwoTiime, and Swisha T to name a few. Ultimately, it’s the thrill of creating something from nothing and the ability to connect with listeners on a deep level that drives me to keep making music.
- What’s one thing you love doing in your free time when not making music?
- When I’m not in the studio, I love spending time with my family. I have a wife and two children, 7 & 11, and they are the reason I work so hard every single day. Life is too short, so I make it a priority to spend my time with them as much as possible.
- What’s your future collaboration and what do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years in your professional career?
- While I can’t reveal specific collaborations yet, I’m excited about the opportunities that have come my way through working with so many incredibly talented artists, producers, and labels over the last few years. Over the next five years, I’m all about keeping the momentum going – growing, evolving, and pushing my boundaries to new heights.
- Topping the charts, touring and rocking sold-out shows, and working with some big names in the industry, my ultimate goal is to make a lasting impression on the music scene and ignite that same fire in others to chase their dreams, because it’s never too late.
