After years of reshaping DJ culture in Australia and New Zealand, Your Shot finally lands in the United States this September. The debut will unfold across Los Angeles and New York City, where aspiring DJs will get their first taste of the decks. For many, this marks the first accessible entry point into an industry often perceived as closed-off and intimidating.
Founded in 2010, Your Shot has already welcomed more than 12,500 participants across Oceania. Its premise remains refreshingly simple: no experience required. Beginners train under industry mentors, develop performance skills, and step on stage before live audiences in festival-style showcases. The goal is less about immediate stardom and more about self-discovery, confidence, and community.
From Bedroom Dreams to Festival Stages
Participants undergo six weeks of structured training through The Academy, covering mixing, track selection, and stage performance. Then comes the real test: performing in front of sold-out crowds. For 200 selected individuals in each city, the journey ends with a showcase judged by industry professionals and talent scouts.
The stories emerging from past competitions prove how transformative the program can be. Former contestants have performed at international festivals including CRSSD, Hideout, Snowbombing, Snow Machine, and BPM. Some names, like Tigerlily, Sippy, and Go Freek, have graduated into global recognition. According to organizers, 62 percent of alumni now DJ regularly, a striking figure in an oversaturated industry.
Founder Steve Pillemer frames the program as a chance to break isolation and spark creativity. He says, “Your Shot is about giving people a platform to challenge themselves, learn the basics, build a community outside their bedrooms, and take their passion for DJing and dance music to the next level. That’s what young Americans are asking for today, just like young Australians, and it’s so exciting to finally be able to answer the call.”
Advisors and Influence
The U.S. debut comes with heavyweight backing. Advisors include LP Giobbi, co-founder of FEMME HOUSE, Harvey Cohen, President at Live Nation’s Vibee, and The Circuit Group, representing names like Chris Lake and Fisher. Their guidance shapes a program designed to feel both authentic and impactful in America’s diverse music landscape.
Registration and the Road Ahead
The first U.S. selection dates are set for September 13 at Catch One in Los Angeles and September 20 at Elsewhere in New York. Registration has opened online, offering a new generation the chance to step forward.
For Americans who dream of becoming a DJ but never knew where to begin, Your Shot might be their ‘shot’.
