ALLKNIGHT on “How Did We Make It Here / Afterthought” and the Future of Women in Electronic Music

  1. Hey ALLKNIGHT! Glad to have you here to talk with you about your latest release ‘How Did We Make It Here’ and ‘Afterthought’.

Hey, thank you for having me – feels so great to finally get these tracks out!

  1. Can you please tell us more details about ‘How Did We Make It Here’ and ‘Afterthought’? How did they come to life and when?

I wrote both of these tracks last year – in fact I wrote How Did We Make It Here almost exactly a year ago to the day! I was in the Colorize studios and had one of those days where I turned my phone on DND and got my head down – it can be hard to have those days what with all the distractions, and when I do manage to really lock in it always really pays off. Afterthought I wrote the instrumental the night before a session with my friend / co-writer / manager Katy and had a decent idea to work off – when we got into the session we wrote the vocal melodies in the first 10 minutes – it was honestly crazy how fast it all came together!

  1. What sets ‘How Did We Make It Here’ and ‘Afterthought’ apart from your previous work, and why should listeners tune in?

These 2 tracks are what I would consider more ‘pretty’ / easy listening – particularly How Did We Make it Here in that regard. I think they both feel really emotional due to the fact that they’re pretty vocal led – so if you’re looking to get into your feels then these two are the ones!

  1. Who is ALLKNIGHT and why music? At what age did you get into music and how?

ALLKNIGHT still feels like such a new project. I launched it back in January 2023 and at the start it really wasn’t my main focus, as I was doing pop music under my own name at the same time. It has since grown into something I had never expected and I now only work on this project – which was never the plan but it came to a point a year in that I realised this was what I was supposed to be doing and being able to have that clarity was such a turning point for me. I always liked music as a child and played saxophone from when I was about 8, I then picked up guitar at 13 and started busking on the streets 6 months later. I went to university at Sir Paul McCartney’s performing arts uni LIPA to study songwriting and music production and since graduating in 2021 I’ve pretty much done music full time with some jobs on the side along the way!

  1. As a woman in the electronic music scene, what challenges have you faced, and how do you think female artists are shaping the future of the industry?

I think I would say I’m pretty lucky in the fact that I haven’t had any major challenges, I think the main thing is just having the confidence to go into these male dominated environments and feel like you are worthy of being there. I’ve entered the industry at a time when women are much more accepted than they have been in the past, so to all the women before me who have pushed those barriers down I am so grateful. I personally have seen more women stepping into the producer’s role, and lots more behind the decks which is so encouraging! Women bring a whole different process and energy to music that I think is so important to be heard. When I’m in the room writing with other women there’s just something so special about it, I can’t put my finger on it exactly but I do think that as women we have the ability to experience and feel emotions so deeply, and being able to do that when creating music is invaluable!

  1. What advice would you give to young women who want to pursue a career in electronic music?

DO IT! This is a time where women are stepping into these typically ‘male dominated’ fields and realising that we are just as capable of doing it. There is so much space for women right now in this industry, and I think that’s what drew me towards working in electronic music instead of pop music where there’s already so many incredibly talented women dominating the scene.

  1. In honor of International Women’s Day, can you share a story of a moment when being a woman brought a unique perspective or advantage to your music or performances?

It’s hard to give one particular moment, but immediately I think of being in writing sessions, and as girls we love to have a debrief / DMC right? So how amazing is it to be able to go into a room with someone you’ve probably never met before and in the first 10 minutes since introducing yourself, you are telling them the deepest and darkest feelings that you’ve been through. That is what writes beautiful music. I have done that many many times and then afterwards, laughed at how these people I just met today know more about my feelings than most people in my life do.

  1. What’s the one activity you love doing in your free time when not making music?

I’m pretty creative so when I’m not making music I love to do pottery, or sew or just make things in general – I got so into it in lockdown and still love spending a weekend crafting! Otherwise I’m a pretty big reader and so love to get comfy with my kindle and a cup of tea (I know, very rock and roll).

  1. Can you tell us more about your dream and future collaboration and what do you hope to achieve in the next 3 years in your professional career?

Oooh hard question – so many to choose from! I would say a big one for me would be Ben Bohmer – I would absolutely love to make something with him one day. Otherwise, in the next 3 years I wanna be touring more, and really take my live show to the next level, maybe a live set instead of a DJ set… Album is definitely on the cards within 3 years and who knows what else!
